At this point it had been baking, maybe an hour and a half. I grabbed a cab, headed home, made the cabbie wait for me, took out the chicken and turned off the stove, sufficiently freaked out my dogs, and came back to the office $20 less for the cost of the cab and 100% relieved I didn't burn down the house. PHEW! The best part? The chicken was perfectly baked. But it made me realize how hard it is to deviate from our normal routines, and also what if I had started a fire. What is most important to me? The first thing that went through my mind was, "Awesome, if the house burnt down this would be your only outfit." I'm not particularly jazzed about my ensemble today. But I also thought what I'd want to save most. The pooches and the fiance obviously. And then probably my passport, some meaningful jewelry, framed photos, my college diploma and an overnight bag of clothes. What would your top "to save" items be?
At 11:30 I was starting to get hungry for lunch so I had a few Triscuits I packed with a piece of cheese from a cocktail event in the office last night. This cheese was actually really good. It was either veggie or herb flavored. Very tasty.
For lunch I pilfered some veggies from the same cocktail leftovers and another piece of cheese which I melted on top of one of my mini pitas (they really are mini, these are cocktail size plates).
I dipped the veggies and the other mini pita in some hummus and had a white peach on the side.
I have a banana and may or may not eat that today. I am really STUFFED!
Leaving work at 4:00 today for an event in Arlington at the Hotel Palomar. I plan to power walk home in my flats (it's about 2.5 miles and all uphill), then have a delicious Asian tuna steak dinner with the fiance and watch a movie. I am ready for the weekend!

That is something that would so happen to me. Glad you are safe!
I would save all my stilettos, my favorite cocktail dresses, and an antique painted vase from Greece.
Enjoy your walk this afternoon- the weather is gorgeous!
I'm so glad you remembered and that you and your house are safe!
I would save old photos, certain clothes and my teddy bear that I've held onto since I was born (aww).
Enjoy the rest of your Thursday!
Eek!! Thank goodness you're alright!!
I would save ANYTHING that was irreplaceable and had treasured meaning to it (but by the time I actually collect all of that, I'd be dead, since there's so much, haha).
I'm a fellow DC-er and thought I would partly de-lurk (still going to remain anonymous though) to tell you that I think the cheese looks like the cheddar with chives the the "cheese man" sells at Eastern Market. Its so yummy and he's always giving out samples. I'll buy some occasionally but it never lasts long in my house.
Oh my regarding this morning. I have totally done that as well - but with a hair straightner - and I never went back to turn it off. This brings up a good point though - that going back and spending $20 on a cab is totally worth what could have happened.
Enjoy the Hotel Palomar! The boyfriend won a free stay there for us, and we should be going to the one in Dupont in October. I can't wait!
I'm SO glad you're house is ok and your chicken turned out great! :)
Hey Quinn,
I've been reading your blog for a few days and am finally commenting. I did not realize that you lived in DC - I live in Ballston. I went to the restraunt at the Hotel Palomar for my birthday. It was FABULOUS. Hope you enjoy. The chicken thing is totally something I would do.
Molly
Oh my goodness that is something I worry about every time I leave the house. I am not sure what I would save. I'll think about it.
How's the book by the way?
hahaha!
1) i am so sorry that you were reading my blog when this happened. i hope you dont become allegric to me or something.
2) i have so done this as well.
3) top save item: wedding bands!! and the dogs. of course. :)
Anna - Thank you, I'm glad we were all safe too. Oooo, saving stilettos, a definite must. The walk was GREAT BTW!
Jenn -Thank you! And so cute about your teddy bear. I have a stuffed monkey at my mom's that I've had since I was born. His name is Monkey, I was original.
Veggie - Thanks for the well wishes. I know, everything to me seems irreplacable!
Anon - Glad to see another DC'er! I love the cheese man at Eastern Market. This wasn't very chive-y, but definitely herbs. Welcome!
Rose - I am always concerned about my straightener as well! I have a sleeve I put it in every day which is a nice "check." We had giveaways last night for free stays at Palomar. I wish I could have been eligible. I am obsessed with Kimpton hotels because you can bring your dogs!!!!
Cookie - Thank you. I will be having chicken salad for lunch today.
Molly - Another DC'er. LOVE it. I bet you had a wonderful experience at Palomar. I really want to eat there now!
Heather - The book is great. Seriously, it will change your life. I will never eat fish on a Monday dining out ever ever ever again.
Caitlin - Don't think I'm allergic I think it set off a chain of thought in my head like this: "Caitlin made crepes, I wonder what type of pan she uses on her stove. Stove. Chicken. Oven. On. F&*%." That's just a reenactment so I'm not 100% it went like that though :)
